Derp Birds are the center of the Derp universe! Originally from their planet of Derpetonia, the Rebirthed birds represent those that escaped to **New Dereptonia**, an identical planet from another dimension and home to the [Derp Apes](/derp-birds/characters/main-collections/the-apes.md), when the [Preds](/derp-birds/characters/main-collections/the-preds.md) invaded their planet.

### Rebirth

Derp Birds started as the [legacy collection](/derp-birds/characters/other-collections/legacy-derp-birds-deprecated.md). In 2022, the legacy collection was migrated to a new [open-policy collection](#user-content-fn-3)[^3] with an artwork upgrade. Any holders of legacy derp birds can still Rebirth by using [the Rebirth portal](https://app.derpbirds.io/play/rebirth).

Rebirth is optional, but most utilities do not work for legacy derp birds.

### Archetypes and Perfect Specimens

All bird traits come from 1 of 14 archetypes. Any bird with matching attributes from 1 archetype is called a Perfect Specimen. Among other benefits, Perfect Specimens also has unique background artwork.

#### Rarity

Archetypes define the rarity of their traits. For example, all Corpo traits are `Epic` rarity.

### Families

In 2021, legacy birds could use The Incubator to create [Derp Eggs](/derp-birds/characters/other-collections/eggs-shards.md), which hatched into [Derplings](/derp-birds/characters/main-collections/the-derplings.md). Holders who keep families(Derp Birds and their Derpling children) together gain some bonuses throughout the Derp ecosystem.

Having a Derp Bird and his Derpling child together in the same account will grant the user the Happy Family achievement which gives the user Derp Dollars each epoch. Users can stack this achievement for each family that they have.

#### :information\_source: How to find family members

Users can find family members of a Derp Bird or Derpling by navigating to that character in the Derp App and viewing the `Story` tab; for example, [this derp bird](https://app.derpbirds.io/marketplace/collections/derp-birds/DP05488/story) had one derp egg that was hatched into a Derpling. The [Derp Marketplace](https://app.derpbirds.io/marketplace/home) will also show users any family members listed for sale.
